Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread thumbnail

Home isn’t always a place — sometimes it’s a feeling, a person, or a quiet moment in the kitchen. This chocolate chip banana bread is one of those recipes that feels like home to me. It’s soft, comforting, and made to be shared with the people you love.

This recipe is intentionally not overly sweet. I use dark chocolate chips to balance the natural sweetness of ripe bananas, creating a loaf that’s rich, tender, and perfect any time of day — breakfast, an afternoon coffee break, or a cozy dessert.

Why You’ll Love This Banana Bread

  • Moist but not greasy
  • Tall, domed loaf with a tender crumb
  • Not overly sweet
  • Customizable with nuts or chocolate
  • Stays soft for several days

Baking Tips for the Best Banana Bread

  • Mash bananas just until lumpy, not fully puréed — small banana bits help give the loaf structure.
  • Avoid overmixing once flour is added to keep the crumb tender.
  • The sour cream + butter combo is the secret to moisture that still slices cleanly.

Storage & Make-Ahead

  • Store at room temperature, tightly wrapped, for 2–3 days
  • Refrigerate for up to 5 days
  • Freeze individual slices for up to 2 months

  • 4 grams (1 tsp) baking powder
  • 4 grams (3/4 tsp) salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)

Wet Ingredients

  • 300 grams mashed overripe bananas (about 3 large)
  • 65 grams (1/3 cup) neutral oil
  • 65 grams (1/3 cup) melted unsalted butter
  • 100 grams (1/2 cup) dark brown sugar
  • 40 grams (3 tbsp) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 8 grams (2 tsp) vanilla extract
  • 60 grams (¼ cup) sour cream or full-fat yogurt

Fold-Ins

  • 120-140 grams (3/4 cups) dark chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate (60–72%)
  • tbsp all purpose flour
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line or grease a loaf pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk all dry ingredients together.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk bananas, oil, butter, and sugars until smooth. Add eggs, vanilla, and sour cream. Whisk until fully combined.
  4. Gently fold dry ingredients into wet until just combined. Do not overmix—stop when no dry streaks remain.
  5. Toss the chocolate chips in flour to prevent sinking then slowly fold in chocolate chips.
  6. Pour batter into the pan then sprinkle a few extra chocolate pieces on top for bakery vibes.
  7. Bake for 50-60 mins and tent loosely with foil if browning too fast.
  8. Cool in pan for 15-20 minutes, then transfer to a rack.
